Story Circles: Teaching Children Compassion Through Literature

Sunday, April 13. 10:00am-11:30am. Shaw Room.

Description

For young children (2-5 years old), parents and caregivers: 30-minute Story Circles led by early-childhood educators, in English and Spanish (10:00am and 11:00am start time) followed by activities with art, music, puppets, and more.

Presenter Bios 

Larry Macmillan

Larry Macmillan is a consultant working with programs on early-learning environments. 

Billie Young

Billie Young is a technical assistance specialist for the National Child Care Information and Technical Assistance Center. 

Tim Ryan

Tim Ryan of Ryan Eduational Resources has been involved in early childhood education for over 20 years in the Greater Seattle area. Many of those years have been with the Head Start and ECEAP programs for less privileged families. The past eight years he has been working with fathers and father figures and their families to encourage and support male involvement in children's lives. He teaches at Overlake Hospital and Bellevue Community College, and works with the Puget Sound Educational School District on a program called Men Count. He also plans conferences for FACES (Families and Children Early Support). 

Beverly Moncrief

Beverly Moncrief is a preschool teacher at Highline Head Start Learning Center.

Suzette Espinoza-Cruz

Suzette Espinoza-Cruz is an early-childhood specialist for the City of Seattle's Human Services Department and the mother of two young, bilingual children.

Suzette Puente

Suzette Puente is an active member of the Latino Child Care Task Force, working to support the needs of young children and their families.

Karen Ko

Karen Ko is the Neighborhood Service Center Manager for the City of Seattle Department of Neighborhoods and a former Head Start program director. 

Terry DiJoseph

Terry DiJoseph is the former director of the Seattle Youth Tutoring Program. 

Paul Noski

Paul Noski is the Region X Manager for the Child Care Bureau. 

Pat Wells 

Pat Wells is the manager of Family Support Programs for the City of Seattle Human Services Department, which includes Seattle's Early Reading First program. 

Ezera Stoker-Graham

Ezera Stoker-Graham of Puget Sound Educational Service District is a family-support specialist working with Early Learning Programs in Pierce County.

Muna Shamdeen

Muna Shamdeen is an assistant teacher at Highline Head Start Learning Center.

Jen Wold

Jen is an early-childhood student at Central Washington University.

Jean Kasota

Jean Kasota licenses child care centers for the Department of Early Learning.  

Uri Israel

Uri Israel of Revens Puppets is a Native American storyteller, award-winning mother, and certificated teacher in Washington State.

I'm unable to make it (working mom with 2 yr. old) but would REALLY appreciate any booklist you could provide.  Thanks for considering!  Seeing people come together for workshops like this makes me feel such hope and faith in the human spirit!
